A 5.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Saitama and Tochigi

A strong 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook areas of the Kanto region in Saitama and Tochigi prefectures at 9:08 a.m. Thursday.

No tsunami warning was issued.

The magnitude of the quake, which triggered earthquake warnings in Tokyo and neighboring areas, reached 5 on the Japanese Shindo earthquake intensity scale.

The quake was felt throughout the Kanto region, with a magnitude of Shindo 4 in Ibaraki Prefecture, some areas in Gunma Prefecture and most of Saitama Prefecture, and Shindo 3 throughout Tokyo and certain parts of Chiba and Kanagawa Prefectures.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of about 50 kilometers.

Hiroyuki Sanada, an official at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said that “no abnormality” had been reported at the Tokai No. 2 nuclear plant in Ibaraki, which was shut down for safety checks.

According to Tokyo Electric Power Company, no power outages have been reported on its network.

Due to the power outage caused by the quake, JR East suspended Tohoku Shinkansen service on the upper and lower lines between Tokyo Station and Shin-Aomori Station, but it has since resumed operation, NHK said.
