Mount Ruapehu is experiencing an “unusual pattern of seismic activity” near the summit

“In addition to the recent drop in lake temperature, Ruapehu has in recent weeks experienced some minor seismic activity,” GNS Science shared on Tuesday.

GNS Science said that a re-examination of seismic data revealed that the quakes began at least in mid-February.

“The earthquakes are small and were initially difficult to identify without careful examination of the data because they are uncommon in Ruapehu and only larger examples are detected by our automated systems,” she said.

“Over the past month, we have seen a maximum of six of these earthquakes per day, and on many days we have had none at all.

“Mount Ruapehu is an active volcano and has the potential to erupt with little or no warning when in a state of minor volcanic unrest.”

Observations found that earthquakes consist of 10 minutes of ground shaking.

“While we are able to pinpoint the location of some larger examples, the small size and style of activity means that our locations, especially depth, are completely uncertain.”

However, she speculated that they originate “near the volcano's summit area at a depth of a few kilometers below the surface.”

According to GNS Science, the earthquakes are “quite different in appearance” compared to the volcanic tremors traditionally seen in Ruapehu.

“Although earthquakes are something new at Ruapehu, and we are working to understand the details of the processes that drive them, they are not thought to pose any concerns about volcanic activity.”

The volcanic alert level remains at 1, and the aviation color code is at green.

Volcanic Alert Level 1 indicates that the main hazards are those expected during volcanic unrest: volcanic steam and gas discharge, earthquakes, landslides, and hydrothermal activity.

“Although Volcanic Alert Level 1 is mostly associated with environmental hazards, the potential for eruption hazards also exists, and eruptions can still occur with little or no warning.”

GNS Science and its National Geological Hazards Monitoring Center are closely monitoring the volcano for further changes.
