A state of emergency has been declared in East Sepik as village leaders continue to assess damage in the province after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake killed at least five people.

Governor Alan Baird confirmed to RNZ Pacific that the death toll was likely to rise in the coming days as they reached remote areas.

The US Geological Survey said the depth of the quake was just over 40 kilometers.

The region shook on Sunday near the town of Ambunti, about 756 kilometers (470 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby.

Dozens of villages along the Sepik River were already facing widespread flooding earlier in March.

Baird has asked local communities to prepare an assessment report from their villages and divisions, and they will prepare a damage report by Wednesday.

He added that they had not received any response from their international partners, but said: “We are managing the situation well so far.”

He said on Monday that about 1,000 homes had been lost.

The most urgent needs are tarpaulins for temporary shelters, clean drinking water, filters, and food.
