East Sepik Governor Alan Baird confirmed that the death toll from Sunday's 6.9-magnitude earthquake has reached three people.

RNZ Pacific reported on Tuesday that five people had died as a result of the quake. However, two people were killed by landslides caused by heavy rains, which were unrelated to the earthquake.

Baird said county damage assessments led by local councilors are being finalized in order to prepare a final damage report.

A state of emergency was declared in the province, which is facing double disasters, after heavy rains caused widespread flooding a few days before the earthquake.

“No army was deployed, so we pulled all our government employees from their regular duties and assigned them to different places to go out and respond,” he added.

“We need tarpaulins, we need water containers, food supplies, basic kitchen items when people rebuild,” he said.

Pure drinking water

The governor said his biggest concern is people's access to clean drinking water.

The US embassy has not yet responded to his call for support, but he is still waiting confidently.

“We are sure that the US Embassy will be ready to help.”

Buckets and water filters were needed to be distributed to people in the worst-affected areas near the Sepik River: Angoram, Wasira Gawi and Ambunti-Drekikir.

He said clean drinking water would be “critical in about three weeks.”

“We are still trying to get fresh water and drinking containers, so when it rains, they can still collect rainwater.

“But once the waters recede…we're going to have really serious problems.”
