Looking back 60 years: How the Great Alaska Earthquake compares

The Great Alaska Earthquake of March 27, 1964 remains the second largest earthquake ever recorded in the world. Every earthquake releases energy when rocks explode after pressure builds up. The energy release from the 1964 earthquake was so large that 600 miles of the fault exploded at once and traveled 60 feet.

Alaska Earthquake Center Senior Scientist Natalia Robert converted the magnitude of different clusters of earthquakes across the United States since 1964 to the energy released and compared it to the 1964 quake.

The 1964 event dwarfs all subsequent US earthquakes. Of all individual and cluster earthquakes greater than magnitude 5, 70.6% of the energy released was from the Great Alaska Earthquake.

On March 27, 1964, at 5:36 PM local time, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake began in Alaska's Prince William Sound.

The scientific impacts of the earthquake have been enormous in shaping the understanding of plate tectonics and subduction zone earthquakes, as well as shaping approaches to understanding and modeling tsunamis. The earthquake generated tsunami waves by shifting the ground and causing landslides. It caused damage as far south as California, and the tectonic tsunami even reached Antarctica.

The shaking from the 1964 earthquake lasted about five minutes. The continuous intense shaking caused countless landslides. The land has changed dramatically and the landscape of south-central Alaska has been permanently altered.

Damage from the earthquake was extensive, but deaths were fairly small for an event of this size. The societal impacts were also enormous, not only in the communities directly impacted by the event but also throughout Alaska.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
