On March 27, 1964, at 5:36 PM local time, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake began in Alaska's Prince William Sound.

The scientific impacts of the earthquake have been enormous in shaping the understanding of plate tectonics and subduction zone earthquakes, as well as shaping approaches to understanding and modeling tsunamis.
