A small earthquake hits New Hampshire

A small earthquake was detected in the Lake District of New Hampshire on Wednesday evening, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the 2.2-magnitude earthquake was reported shortly before 9 p.m., and was centered about two and a half miles northwest of Guilford, New Hampshire.

An earthquake this strong could certainly be felt but it was unlikely to cause much damage, said Thomas Pratt, a USGS research geophysicist based in Reston, Virginia.

“If you have a vase sitting on the edge of a bookshelf, you might ruin it,” Pratt said. He said that damage to land and property is more likely when the earthquake reaches four degrees or more.

The quake followed a 2.0 magnitude earthquake detected north of Concord, New Hampshire, in January. A 2.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in Concord in December, according to the US Geological Survey.

New England has not had a major earthquake since 1755, when a 6.0-6.3 magnitude quake centered east of Cape Ann shook much of the region. The last time New Hampshire had an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 6.0 was in 1638, but Pratt said that's likely an overestimate.

Smaller earthquakes, like the one that occurred Wednesday, are not uncommon in New Hampshire, he said.

“The common thing is to get bunches of these things, so it wouldn't be surprising if there were a few of them in the next six months or so,” Pratt said.
