OnePlus Nord vs. OnePlus 6T: Do You Need to Upgrade?
The OnePlus 6T was well received a few years ago thanks to its gorgeous display, fast performance, and low cost compared to other flagship products. But in the world of smartphones, it’s been two years, and with the OnePlus 6T, we’ve introduced some of the best phone new features and enhancements that make you feel a bit outdated.
As flagship phone prices continue to rise, OnePlus has opted for a more midrange phone that retains some premium features. As a result, the OnePlus Nord is a much cheaper phone with features that match, and sometimes exceed, what the OnePlus 6T can offer.
A comparison of the OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus 6T shows how OnePlus is making progress as a phone maker, even though it appears to expand the product line beyond flagship handsets. And who knows? Maybe current OnePlus 6T owners will be well-equipped at OnePlus Nord to decide that this midrange device needs to be the next smartphone to upgrade.
The differences between OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T are:
Price for OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T
At present, it’s difficult to claim on mobile phones that it is a better price than the OnePlus Nord. It’s the cheapest mobile phone OnePlus has sold in a few years, starting at £379 in the UK and €399 for the rest of Europe. (Where is the US price you ask? We’ll get it right away.) For that, you get a phone with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The OnePlus 6T started at $549 when the 6GB/128GB model debuted in 2018, but the most popular version of the 6T was probably the one sold through T-Mobile. The phone was $579 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, so there’s a difference of about $80 to $100 from Nord’s price, considering currency conversion. These days, used versions of OnePlus 6T are available in online stores for about $300.

The OnePlus Nord is cheaper than the OnePlus 6T at the time, but the new phones aren’t available at least in the US. OnePlus will ship Nord first in Europe and India. It’s alluded to a lower-cost handset that might eventually come to the US, but it’s probably going to be a slightly different model, such as a less powerful processor. Currently, Nord can be imported from the countries where it is sold, but it is reported that current phones do not have a band that works in the US mobile network.
OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T design
Despite its low price, OnePlus Nord doesn’t look like a low cost cell phone. The OnePlus uses metal and glass in its Nord design, so it doesn’t really feel like a cheap phone. Placing the Nord next to the OnePlus 6T makes it hard to tell if it’s a midrange model or an aging flagship.

However, starting with the amount of screen space available, there are differences. At 6T, OnePlus hosted a front camera using a teardrop design. The phone’s bezel is minimal, but the camera is sunk above the display. For the Nord, the OnePlus had in-screen cutouts for the two front cameras. As a result, the OnePlus Nord has a slightly larger screen than the OnePlus 6T, even if both phones have a 6.4-inch display.
Flip the phone over and you’ll find another approach to the rear camera array. The OnePlus 6T’s two lenses are in the middle of the phone, and the OnePlus Nord has multiple cameras placed in a vertical strip in the upper left corner. In low cost phones like the Nord, both phones use an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The OnePlus 6T and OnePlus Nord are about the same size, but the Nord is one inch smaller than the 6T. The Nord is also slightly lighter than the 6T, from 6.49 ounces to 6.52 ounces. For the 6T, we recommend OnePlus Nord’s Blue Marble color over the more stable Mirror Black and Midnight Black options. (If you’re crazy about black, you can always opt for the OnePlus Nord in Gray Onyx.)
OnePlus Nord vs. OnePlus 6T Display
As mentioned above, the difference in display size between OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T is not very clear. Also, the resolution between phones is almost the same. (2400 x 1080 for Nord, 2340 x 1080 for 6T.) However, the two AMOLED panels used by OnePlus have a big difference, depending on the refresh rate.

The OnePlus 6T features a 60Hz refresh rate, which is quite common on smartphones. But with OnePlus 7 Pro, phone makers have begun to add a 90Hz refresh rate as a major phone feature. That continues with OnePlus Nord, but faster refresh rates are usually reserved for the more expensive flagship handsets.

OnePlus Nord’s fast refresh rate means a smooth scrolling experience when surfing the web. Games that take advantage of faster refresh rates are more immersive. We’ve seen some phones with a 90Hz refresh rate and this is definitely a better experience than a standard display.
OnePlus Nord vs. OnePlus 6T Camera
There is no OnePlus 6T handy for capturing a photo and comparing it to what the OnePlus Nord produces. But given the spec sheets for the two phones and considering the improvements OnePlus has made to image processing over the last two years, I think the Nord is a step up from the image capture capabilities of the 6T.
OnePlus Nord (Image credit: Toms Guide)
Start with the lens. The OnePlus 6T is a pair of rear shooters, a 16-megapixel main lens, and a 20MP secondary camera, both with f/1.7 apertures. The OnePlus Nord is a little more complicated because it has a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra wide lens, a 5MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro lens.
The macro lens is removable, but you can use the Nord wide-angle lens to capture a more detailed background. The dedicated depth sensor allows you to shoot portrait shots sharper on your new OnePlus phone than you can with OnePlus. 6T. Nord’s 48MP sensor also translates into clearer images.

On the front is the OnePlus 6T with only one 160MP lens. The OnePlus Nord doubles the pleasure of taking a selfie with a 32-megapixel main lens powered by an 8-megapixel wide-angle shooter. The latter lens means that you can pack more people into your self-portrait or include more of the surrounding background. (Ideally both)
In terms of software, OnePlus cameras have a hard time catching up with the best camera phones as phone makers such as Apple and Google have actually nailed down the image processing part of their camera phones. The OnePlus 6T has taken a step in the right direction. OnePlus included Night Mode, which is still used in OnePlus Nord. OnePlus has also been fine-tuning the post-processing since the 6T’s appeared, and Nord hasn’t been able to handle iPhone SE on photos yet, but not too late. If you switch from 6T to Nord, you’ll be happy with the photos that your new phone can generate.
OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T performance
When the OnePlus 6T debuted two years ago, it came with the best Snapdragon chipset available, the Snapdragon 845. Over the next two years, Qualcomm introduced a more powerful chip, filling some of the gap with Apple’s best-in-class processors, but not found within the OnePlus Nord. Instead, in an effort to reduce costs, OnePlus has adopted the Snapdragon 765G for midrange models.

The Snapdragon 765G is a capable system-on-chip that can easily handle the tasks that regular smartphone users throw. But it doesn’t match Qualcomm’s 8 series chips. It’s even a chip two years behind. If you’re used to running many processor-intensive apps on the OnePlus 6T, you’ll notice some differences when upgrading, as the OnePlus Nord review found only average performance on the new phones. The 6T is definitely a better graphics test than the Nord.
The OnePlus Nord is connected to a 5G network, but there is one thing you can’t do with a 6T. The Snapdragon 765G includes an integrated 5G modem, but the OnePlus 6T was launched when the commercial 5G network was still eye-catching for wireless operators. So if you want to enjoy higher data rates, OnePlus Nord allows you to hop to a nearby 5G network, at least if you live in an area where that service is available.
OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T Battery Comparison
The Snapdragon 765G consumes less power, so the OnePlus Nord processor may help extend the battery life of the mobile phone. The OnePlus also tilts the scale in the courtesy of Nord by equipping it with a larger battery than what the OnePlus 6T has. The old phone used a 3,700 mAh power pack and OnePlus Nord increased the battery size to 4,115 mAh.

I haven’t run an official battery test on the Nord yet. We prefer to calibrate the screen with 150 nits and run tests on the same cellular network to produce comparable results. However, in an unofficial test of setting the screen brightness of the Nord screen to 50% and surfing the web via LTE until the juice runs out, OnePlus’s new phone lasted 11 hours 18 minutes. Best phone battery life. The official OnePlus 6T time of 10 hours and 23 minutes will certainly improve.
Thanks to the phone’s dash charge technology, the OnePlus 6T was able to move from a dead battery to 60% charge in 30 minutes. However, OnePlus has since improved the charging game with the faster WarpCharge 30T technology included in the OnePlus Nord. With WarpCharge 30T you can reach 70% after 30 minutes. Our Nord was charged up to 68%, which is a bigger battery than the one in the OnePlus 6T. Battery life is definitely an upgrade for this new model.
Outlook for OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 6T
Like the OnePlus 6T, the OnePlus Nord surpasses it in some notable ways. This is especially impressive considering that the Nord is never the flagship, even though OnePlus packs some premium features into this budget-conscious device.
The faster the OnePlus Nord refresh rate, the better the experience will be over the OnePlus 6T. OnePlus cheap phones will last longer and will charge your battery faster. Nord also hopes to produce better images than the 6T can.
This comparison between the OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus 6T involves some trade-offs, mainly in terms of performance. You’ll have to put your phones side by side to test to make sure, but the Nord isn’t as grumpy as the 6T.
Still, it’s a compromise, and several smartphone owners will be happy to do, especially if it means paying less than $500 for a top-notch phone. The OnePlus 6T is still a valid device, but if you’re considering an upgrade, the OnePlus Nord is a tough option, assuming it’s available in your area.
