'It shook the windows': Metro East residents react to Thursday night's earthquake

“I jumped. I thought something had hit my garage. It was a bang. Flash bang,” said Vicki Mahalo of Troy.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL – On Good Friday, hundreds of people flocked to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fairview Heights for the last fish of the season.

Around these tables, people were munching on delicious food… and talking about an unpleasant surprise that happened the night before.

“I jumped. I thought something had hit my garage. It was a bang. Flash bang,” said Vicki Mahalo of Troy.

When asked if it bothered him, Swansea's Phil Elfrink said: “It did. It rattled the windows.”

According to the USGS, a 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck through the hamlet of Germantown around 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

From Breeze to Fairview Heights to Troy — people felt it.

“I saw the TV shaking and heard a bang,” Mahalo said. “I went out and walked around. Did something fall on my roof?”

“It felt kind of weird at first.” said Carrie Freund, who was sitting on her bed in O'Fallon when a mysterious tremor stopped and caught her off guard. “I looked and turned around. I didn't see anything coming in or anything, so I said to my husband, 'I think I'm crazy.'

The majority of people who attended the fish fry said they didn't really feel the earthquake, but those who did, won't forget it.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or serious damage.
