Taiwan earthquake: Hundreds still waiting for rescue, 12 more people still missing

About 400 people are still stranded and awaiting rescue in Taiwan after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country this week, the island's fire department said on Saturday.

Authorities said the stranded people were considered safe, but were isolated by landslides and other blockages on rural roads near the island's hard-hit east coast.

Taiwan's National Fire Agency said the death toll from the earthquake had risen to 13 after three bodies were found on a hiking trail through the mountainous area. The association added that two cases were discovered on Friday and one on Saturday, saying that teams are still working to confirm the identity of the people who have recovered.

The quake, the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years, shook the entire island on Wednesday and was felt as far away as Hong Kong and Shanghai.

The authorities said that more than a thousand people were receiving treatment for injuries, and six people were still missing.

In Hualien County, the most affected area, buildings collapsed and landslides occurred. Survivors told CNN that many local stores and businesses, some in operation for more than a decade, disappeared one morning.

Rescue operations continued on Saturday due to bad weather, according to Taiwanese authorities, who planned to send a technician and a low-orbit satellite to assist in the efforts.

Wednesday's quake shook more parts of Taiwan with greater force than any other quake since 1999 — when a 7.7-magnitude quake struck the center of the island, killing 2,400 people and injuring 10,000.

This week's relatively low death toll is thanks to the government's effort to prepare after lessons learned 25 years ago.

Most of the earthquake victims died outdoors due to falling rocks or landslides. Four of them were hiking in the Taroko Gorge, four died on mountain highways, and another was working in a remote quarry, according to authorities.

So far, only one person has been killed in a building collapse – the Uranus Building in downtown Hualien. She initially ran away but returned to rescue her pet cat, CNN affiliate SET reported.
