Earthquake updates in the Philadelphia area Office of Emergency Management

The US Geological Survey confirmed that a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, on April 5, 2024 at 10:23 a.m. The quake was felt in Philadelphia, with reports of shaking coming to city public safety officials almost immediately.

Immediately, the city released its emergency operations plan to assess the situation, coordinate response organizations, and prepare to respond to requests for assistance. At 10:40 a.m., the city's Emergency Operations Center was activated by the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to assess damage and impacts and ascertain any unmet needs. OEM convened more than 25 local, regional, state and federal partners to respond with a focus on public safety services, city utility and transportation infrastructure, health care facilities, and community and cultural centers such as schools and historic buildings.

As of 1:15 p.m., no major problems or injuries had been reported in the city.

Philadelphia Fire Department stations are assessing their neighborhoods for any damage to buildings that may have been weakened by recent storms, and any infrastructure issues throughout the entire city. The Department of Licensing and Inspections continues to investigate reports of construction defects. Philadelphia International Airport was briefly delayed for inspections but has returned to routine operations – air travelers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline.
