Newark homes damaged during quake deemed structurally safe: New Jersey officials

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) — Three multifamily homes in New Jersey damaged during Friday's earthquake were deemed structurally safe Saturday morning.

According to officials, PSE&G has restored power to the buildings and residents can return to their homes.

The positive update comes as state officials continue to assess the effects of the earthquake and its aftershocks.

The city of Newark evacuated 10 families Friday over concerns about potential structural damage to their homes located near the intersection of 7th Avenue and 3rd Street.

Eyewitness News video shows some roof damage. One house appears to have moved during the earthquake and is now leaning against the house next door.

Shortly after the quake struck at 10:23 a.m. Friday, the city received a 911 call reporting structural damage.

When firefighters arrived, they evacuated the three buildings.

A total of 25 people, including 3 children, were affected by the evacuation.

Among the displaced is a 64-year-old woman, who is disabled and had to be physically removed from the house.

“We live on the second floor. So I had to come and ask someone to help me because I can't get down the stairs on my own,” Yvonne Asbury said.

Asprey was sitting in her car waiting in limbo until she heard from the city where she was going.

A concern for some families is finding a hotel or place to go that will accept their pets.

One man has two cats. Another family has a small dog so they can't go to a shelter.

Some families received a hotel voucher for three nights.

The city continues to inspect buildings for potential damage and power outages.

The US Geological Survey said more than 42 million people may have felt the midday quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, or about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of New York City and 50 miles (50 miles) west of New York City. 80 km).
