With an earthquake shaking the East Coast of the United States before a total solar eclipse, one might wonder if the Moon's position has anything to do with this seismic event.

The effect, the researchers admit, is very weak, and likely only works in shallow faults. Based on their calculations, only one in 10,000 earthquakes that occur during a period of increased tidal pressure can be linked to the Moon's location.

The gravity of the Moon – or even the Sun – is far too weak to trigger an earthquake compared to the forces that move tectonic plates. Tectonic movements and the presence of faults or weak rock layers underground are still the main factors controlling the occurrence of an earthquake.
