A Greek citizen leads 11 tourists to safety after the Hualien earthquake

Taipei, April 7 (CNA) Greek citizen Dimitris Pelbas became a hero after leading 11 people to safety following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Taiwan's east coast on April 3.

Balbas, along with two family members, were hiking in Taroko Gorge when the quake struck, leaving them and nine other tourists stranded on the Baiyang Road due to landslides, according to the rescue team.

The man, later identified as the son-in-law of Taiwan's former ambassador to New Zealand, Tsai Erhwang (蔡爾晃), helped six adults climb over the rubble to safety.

Balbas later informed police that a family of five were still trapped in the national park and subsequently joined the National Police Agency's 7th Special Police Corps to assist in the rescue efforts.

In a video posted by the Corps, Balbas and other rescuers were seen using a rope ladder to escort the family, including three children, to safety.

After their rescue, family members shed tears of gratitude as they hugged Belbas, who had previously participated in rescue operations.
