U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, doubled down on her comments about Friday's earthquake in the Northeast and the upcoming solar eclipse expected across North America as signs from God in response to online criticism.

On Friday, in the wake of a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that was centered in New Jersey and shook the Northeast, Greene posted on X, formerly Twitter, that she views natural phenomena as divine symbolism.

“God is sending America strong signals commanding us to repent. Earthquakes, eclipses and many other things are coming. “I pray our country listens,” Greene wrote.

Readers added context in response to Green's comment, culminating in a community note appearing below the original post. They pointed out that astronomers have known for years that a solar eclipse will occur on April 8. In addition, the National Earthquake Information Center reports that about 55 earthquakes occur daily worldwide, due to movement between the Earth's tectonic plates on active or inactive faults.
