Greene defends the claim that eclipses and earthquakes are signs of repentance

(The Hill) – Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Sunday defended an earlier statement that said Monday's eclipse and Friday's earthquake in the New York area were signs from God commanding people to repent.

After two days of backlash, Greene made a community note that was added to provide context to her original post. She said that although eclipses are predictable, they are still God's creation and can be signs for those who believe.

“Many have mocked and ridiculed this post, and even posted comments on the community,” Green said in a post on Sunday morning.

“Jesus talked about this in Luke 12:54-56,” Green continued. “Yes, eclipses can be predicted, earthquakes happen, and we know when comets pass, but God created all these things and made them signs for those of us who believe.”

On Friday, an earthquake shook the New York area, which rarely witnesses such incidents. On Monday, people across the country will witness a total solar eclipse, a rare phenomenon set to occur in two decades.

In a post on Friday, Green wrote that “God is sending America strong signals asking us to repent. Earthquakes, eclipses and many other things are coming. “I pray that our country will listen.”

A community note was added later, providing links to government resources.

“Earthquakes happen all the time, all over the world, and we can track them in real time using USGS resources,” the report states. “Eclipses are not random, they follow strict mathematical rules and can be predicted centuries in advance. NASA has a website that lists eclipses up to the year 3000.

Greene apologized in 2021 during a heated closed-door meeting of the House GOP conference for her past controversial statements and embrace of the QAnon conspiracy theory.
