Aftershocks continue after New Jersey earthquake

As the sun re-emerged from the moon's shadow Monday afternoon, an aftershock shook the ground near the epicenter of Friday's quake, but you probably didn't feel the ground moving beneath your feet, nor did anyone else.

It was notable only for the fact that it was the 43rd aftershock, according to a USGS count.

It scored only a 1.6 on the “magnitude of the moment” scale, and did not even qualify for the “weak feeling” level of 2 in the USGS rating system. In fact, of the 43 aftershocks that followed the earthquake, only five of magnitude 2 or better were recorded.

The highest temperature was 3.8 degrees around 6pm on Friday, and was felt in and around Philadelphia.

All aftershocks were centered near the epicenter of the 4.8-magnitude “mainshock” earthquake, at Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County, north-central New Jersey, which occurred at 10:23 a.m. Friday.

“Aftershocks are expected, nothing out of the ordinary,” said Alexandra Hatem, a USGS research geologist at the Geohazard Sciences Center in Golden, Colorado.

The most recent aftershock was measured at 3:43pm on Monday — about 20 minutes after the sun was 90% covered in shadow over Philadelphia — and no, it had nothing to do with the eclipse.

The moment magnitude system, which is similar to the Richter scale, is logarithmic, meaning that each number on the scale represents a 10-fold increase in ground motion detected by the seismograph. A magnitude 5 earthquake will be ten times stronger than a magnitude 4 earthquake.

Aftershocks, which are “minor adjustments” along a fault line, always follow a mainshock, the USGS says. It can last for weeks and even months.

The epicenter of Friday's quake is believed to be along a “non-active” fault line, according to the US Geological Survey.

No injuries or structural damage were reported, but the tremors sent waves of terror to Philadelphia and New York and from Maryland to New England.

The US Geological Survey said it had received more than 160,000 reports of earthquakes, which it said was a record number.
