Man who allegedly acted erratically dies after police arrive
A man died Sunday after shouting, removing his clothes, exercising on the streets and hopping on a car in the Middletown neighborhood of San Diego, police said.
Officers were dispatched to Columbia Street near Sassafras Street at around 12:45 p.m. after several 911 callers reported the man was acting erratically. Police Lt. Andra Brown said the man took off his shorts and pulled his shirt over his head at one point.
When officers arrived, the man was lying in the street and was shaking, Brown said. Officers handcuffed him as a result of the reported behavior, performed an assessment, and found he was in medical distress. They took off the handcuffs and began CPR until the doctors arrived and resumed efforts.
The man died before he could be taken to hospital. He had not yet been identified.
Police initially viewed the incident as a death in custody and called the Homicide Unit, which is investigating deaths in custody. As the man turned out to be in medical distress before officers arrived, the incident ultimately did not qualify as a death in custody, Brown said.
