Russia has described the flooding of the Ural River as a “very tense” situation as water levels continue to rise. Thousands of people in southern Russia have been forced to leave their homes, and authorities in neighboring Kazakhstan say the number of evacuees there has risen to 97,000. The water level of the river – Europe's third longest – rose more than 10 meters (33 feet) on Wednesday, well above its breaking point, after rapidly melting snow and ice swelled it. Despite the floods being described as the worst to hit the region in 80 years, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there were no plans for President Vladimir Putin to visit the flooded area.
