7 members of Hamas leader's family killed in Israeli airstrike – BBC News

Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, has confirmed that his three sons and four grandsons were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. They were targeted while riding in a car in the Al-Shati camp near Gaza City. It was reported that the family was on their way to a celebration to mark the first day of the Muslim holiday of Eid. Mr. Haniyeh has been central to the negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza war, in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hamas. Mr Haniyeh condemned what he called a “treacherous and cowardly strike”, but said the attack would not affect the search for a peace deal. Israel has confirmed that it carried out the attack, describing Mr Haniyeh's sons as “Hamas military operatives”. The statement did not mention the deaths of Mr Haniyeh's four grandchildren. Ismail Haniyeh is considered the overall leader of Hamas and has been a prominent member of the movement since 1980. In 2017 he was elected head of the political office of Hamas. Gunmen led by Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. . In Gaza, the majority of which are civilians, more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israel's offensive there since October, according to the territory's Hamas-run Health Ministry.
