Missoula hosts the Geological Hazards for Earthquake Preparedness Program

MISSOULA, Montana (KGVO-AM News) – For anyone who has experienced an earthquake, there is nothing scarier, and since Missoula is in “earthquake country,” the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geological Hazards Program will hold a special workshop here on May 1 and 2 .

I spoke with Jan Javelot, a geohazard specialist and associate professor at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in Butte, on Friday, about the purpose of the program.

“The main goal of the workshop is actually to bring people together,” Javello began. “Earth scientists, researchers, engineers, agencies, local governments and various stakeholders will be there to talk and discuss the geological hazards and risks that threaten Montana and the communities surrounding Montana.”

The main topics will be earthquakes, faults, active faults and landslides, Gavelot said, because Montana is earthquake country, and we have a history of large earthquakes. He said that we want to highlight these risks, study them, and find strategies to mitigate them, especially since Montana's population is increasing, and there are greater risks due to potential seismic activity.

Gavilo was keen to stress the fact that earthquakes cannot be predicted, but preparing for the inevitable is vital to everyone's survival.

“We cannot predict earthquakes but we can predict or estimate how bad they will be,” he said. “There are steps that can be taken in terms of how we design our bridges and how we design our schools. There are even plans on how to react in the event of an earthquake, such as 'cover and wait.'

Interest in the Geohazards program is high, with many Montana political leaders sending representatives to attend, Gavelot said.

“Kind of special for this meeting; we've gotten confirmation that someone from (Congressman) Ryan Zinke's office, and someone from the offices of Steve Daines and Jon Tester will also be attending, so there's a lot of interest,” he said. “We have about 40 participants. The main goal of this workshop is that we are trying to provide new updates and research projects that we have been doing in the states that focus on geohazards.

The program will be held at the Emergency Operations Center on May 1 and 2 at 140 North Russell, in the same complex as the Missoula County Elections Center.
