An explosion of small earthquakes yesterday

A wave of earthquakes was detected yesterday, starting at 12.33 in Lagaville, southwest of Mount Thorbjörn, on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and whether there are any changes, but at the moment we do not see any changes,” says Bryndis Ver Gisladóttir, a specialist in natural hazards at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

She says there is potential for tension in the area, but it is not yet known exactly what causes the earthquake swarm. When asked if this was a sign that something bigger was coming, like a volcanic eruption, she said it was unexpected at this moment.

“We're just watching to see if some new clues come in.”

90 tremors in the explosion

No seismic activity has been detected in Lagaville, near northwest of Grindavik, since midnight.

An earthquake swarm began there after midday yesterday, and about ninety earthquakes were measured. They were all smaller than 1 magnitude and most were about 2-4 km deep.

Earth scientists from the Meteorological Office say the earthquake swarm may be the result of tension changes in the Earth's crust, due to ongoing volcanic inflation at Svartsinje.

With the notification issued by the Met Office, a composite chart, which can be seen above, shows the location of the earthquakes on the map and their depth.

The upper right part shows the magnitude of the earthquakes that occurred from yesterday afternoon until last night. Below is the cumulative number of earthquakes, and below is the number of earthquakes per hour.
