The Booker Prize-winning author said his eye was left hanging in his face “like a soft-boiled egg”, and that the loss of the eye “grieves him every day”. “I remember thinking I was dying,” she said. “Fortunately, I was wrong.” The attack took place at an educational institute in the state of New York in August 2022, while he was preparing to give a speech. She recalled how the assailant came “sprinting up the stairs” and stabbed her 12 times, including in the neck and stomach, in a 27-second attack.
