A 2.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Adelaide and surrounding areas

An earthquake shook residents of Adelaide and its surrounding areas on Monday evening.

The 2.7 magnitude quake reportedly occurred around 7.16pm, with Geoscience Australia locating the epicenter in the Mount Barker area, about 30km outside Adelaide, near the communities of Hay Valley, Hahndorf and Nairne.

The Meteorological Office said there was no tsunami threat due to the quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.

So far, the quake was reportedly felt by about 400 people across the Adelaide Hills and urban areas, according to the Australian Geosciences Authority.

“A small earthquake in the Adelaide Hills. “It's the rumble that scares me,” someone wrote on X.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in South Australia, with a 3.5 magnitude earthquake rocking South Australia's mid-north region earlier this year.

The Australian Geosciences Authority recorded the quake about 5 kilometers northeast of Jamestown and at a depth of 10 kilometers in January.
