A second earthquake hits South Australia this week

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook the north-central region of the state Wednesday afternoon, with additional aftershocks possible. Reports indicate that people more than 50 kilometers away felt the quake, which occurred around 4:06 p.m. near Jamestown. Within two hours, more than 160 reports were received.

Chief seismologist David Love said the quake's epicenter was located just northeast of the city, and was likely at a depth of 5 kilometers or less.

This is the second earthquake to be recorded in South Australia this week, after the Adelaide Hills were hit by a minor quake late on Monday evening, causing minor tremors across the metropolitan region but causing no major damage.

The earthquake, which measured 2.7 on the Richter scale, occurred under Mount Parker at a depth of 22 kilometers, and occurred at approximately 7:16 p.m.

Despite the relatively low magnitude of the quake, residents filed more than 300 reports within two hours of the quake, according to data from the Australian Seismological Society.

This was not the first seismic activity in the region; Adelaide Hills has a history of similar events. A more pronounced 3.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in March 2022.

Adelaide experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location above several fault lines. These include the Barra Fault, which runs from Gawler through the northern suburbs and under the CBD, and the Eden-Burnside Fault, which runs through the southern and eastern suburbs.

In addition, there is the Willunga Fault Line, which winds its way from the South Adelaide Hills, west of Bold Mountain Reservoir, through Willunga, and extends to Silex Beach.
