A strong earthquake in Japan leaves nine people with minor injuries, but there is no tsunami

A strong earthquake struck southwest Japan, slightly injuring nine people and causing damage such as burst water pipes and small landslides, but there is no risk of a tsunami, authorities said.

The epicenter of Wednesday's 6.6-magnitude quake was off the west coast of the main island of Shikoku in the southwest of the country, in an area called the Bungo Channel – a strait that separates Shikoku from the main island of Kyushu in the south.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake occurred at a depth of 30 miles below sea level and did not pose a tsunami risk.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said six people in Ehime Prefecture, two in neighboring Kochi and two others in Oita on Kyushu Island suffered minor injuries, most from falls at home.

Water pipes ruptured in a number of locations in the city of Sukumo, Kochi Prefecture, and tombstones collapsed at a Buddhist temple in the town of Ainan, Ehime Prefecture, according to local media reports.

Roof falls have also been reported.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said no malfunctions were reported in four reactors operating at three nuclear power plants in Shikoku and Kyushu.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 2011 devastated large areas along the northeastern coast of Japan, killing nearly 20,000 people and triggering the nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi.

On January 1, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the north-central region of Noto, killing 241 people.
