TRI-CITIES, Wash. – While many people in the Tri-Cities felt or heard about Friday night's earthquake – officials are warning of the potential for future quakes that could impact our area.

Friday's quake, which was officially measured by the U.S. Geological Survey as a 2.7-magnitude quake, is not the first to hit the Tri-Cities, but it is one of the few that can actually be felt.

According to Jenna Kuchenauer, public information officer for Benton County Fire District 1,

What we witnessed Friday night was a good warning that we need to be mindful of the fact that we are not outside earthquake country.

Sometime in the near future, states in the Pacific Northwest, including Washington and Oregon, will likely experience a large-scale earthquake called a Cascadia event — which could cause significant damage to infrastructure beyond our local community.
