Today's Earthquake: Hualien, Taiwan, was struck by five earthquakes in nine minutes

Shufeng Town, Hualien County, Taiwan was hit by five earthquakes within 9 minutes on Monday, Central News Agency Focus Taiwan reported.

Earlier, Taiwan's capital was hit by a “strong” earthquake, which the Central Meteorological Administration said was a 5.5-magnitude quake originating east of Hualien City.

The area was the epicenter of a 7.4-magnitude earthquake on April 3, causing landslides around the mountainous region that closed roads, while buildings in the main city of Hualien were severely damaged.

At least 17 people were killed in the quake, with the last body discovered on April 13 in a quarry.

On Monday, an earthquake struck Taiwan at around 5:08 pm local time (0908 GMT) and could be felt in the capital, Taipei.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 5.3 at a depth of 8.9 km.

“It sounded like one of the strongest earthquakes or aftershocks since the big earthquake earlier this month,” an AFP worker said.

The Hualien Fire Department said in a short post on its official social media channel that it had sent teams to inspect any disaster caused by the earthquake.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and report back in due course.”

Taiwan witnesses frequent earthquakes because it is located at the intersection of two tectonic plates.

The April 3 earthquake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, which caused rocks to fall around the city of Hualien.

This was the most severe in Taiwan since 1999, when a magnitude 7.6 hit the island.

The death toll was much higher at the time, with 2,400 people killed in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history.

Stricter building regulations – including enhanced seismic requirements in building codes – and widespread public awareness of disasters appear to have prevented a more serious disaster than the large earthquake in April.
