A group of earthquakes is shaking Taiwan after a strong earthquake killed 13 people earlier this month

A group of earthquakes struck Taiwan, the strongest measuring 6.1, according to the US Geological Survey. There was no immediate information about damage or casualties.

The tremors struck early Tuesday. This follows a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the island earlier this month, killing 13 people and injuring more than 1,000 others.

The epicenter of the earthquake was along the coast of rural and mountainous Hualien County. This was the strongest earthquake Taiwan has witnessed in the past 25 years, and was followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

According to the US Geological Survey, Tuesday's earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.1, was centered 28 kilometers south of Hualien City, at a depth of 10.7 kilometers.

The other six quakes ranged in magnitude from 4.5 to 6, all near Hualien City.

Experts say strong earthquakes are no stranger to Taiwan, but their effects on the high-tech island's 23 million residents have been contained thanks to its excellent earthquake preparedness.
