Shufeng Town in Hualien was hit by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake

Taipei, April 22 (CNA) Successive earthquakes continued in central Hualien County Monday night, peaking when the 5.9-magnitude quake shook not only most of Taiwan, but even the Penghu Islands off Taiwan's west coast.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The 5.9-magnitude quake, which occurred at 10:11 p.m., was centered in Shufeng Township, 26.5 kilometers southeast of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 8.6 kilometers, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The earthquake intensity, which measures the actual impact of a seismic event, was highest in Hualien and Nantou counties, reaching 4 on Taiwan's 7-level earthquake intensity scale.

A total of 42 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 or higher struck the towns of Shufeng, Fenglin and Fengbin in central Hualien County from 5:08 p.m. to 10:44 p.m., of which 11 earthquakes exceeded a magnitude of 5.

During a press conference earlier in the evening, Wu Xinfu, director of the CWA's Earthquake Monitoring Center, said the series of quakes were aftershocks from the 7.2-magnitude quake that rocked Taiwan on April 3 and left at least 17 people dead.

The high frequency of aftershocks is similar to the hours and days immediately following the April 3 earthquake.

Wu said it is occurring in an “empty zone” where aftershocks have rarely been seen in the past three weeks, but he believes it is “not particularly abnormal” and represents a release of energy in a short period of time.
