Hualien earthquake leaves two buildings partially collapsed, no casualties

Hualien, April 23 (CNA) Two buildings in Hualien City partially collapsed and tilted after a series of earthquakes struck eastern Taiwan early Tuesday, including two of magnitude 6.0 and 6.3.

An entire hotel (富凱大飯店) on Zhongshan Road and the Tong Shuai Building (統帥大樓) on Mengli Road in downtown Hualien partially collapsed after the quakes, but there were no reports of anyone trapped in the buildings, according to local authorities.

The Full Hotel was undergoing renovation when the quakes struck, while the already unoccupied Tong Shuai building was slated for demolition following a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Hualien on April 3, authorities said.

Both buildings were cordoned off.

Teng Xiuyu (鄧子榆), head of Hualien's Department of Economic Affairs, told reporters that the city government has asked all residents living in buildings marked for demolition to evacuate their homes due to safety concerns, as more aftershocks could hit the city.

A total of 93 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 or higher struck Hualien County from 5:08 p.m. on Monday to 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday, of which 23 quakes exceeded a magnitude of 5.

The largest were two earthquakes measuring 6.0 and 6.3, which occurred at 2:26 a.m. and 2:32 a.m. on Tuesday, respectively.

Wu Xinfu (吳健富), director of the Central Weather Administration's Seismic Center, said Monday that the series of quakes were aftershocks of the 7.2-magnitude quake that struck Taiwan on April 3 and killed at least 17 people.
