Aftershocks from the New Jersey quake rise to 134, but they are becoming less frequent

Weak earthquake aftershocks continue to be detected in areas near the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook New Jersey and several other eastern states on April 5, but the number of aftershocks has diminished in recent days.

After an active weekend with 22 aftershocks detected in the Hunterdon and Somerset County area, seven new aftershocks were reported Monday, two on Tuesday, just one on Wednesday and one on Thursday through early afternoon, according to USGS data. . .

The latest quake was a very weak magnitude 1.0 quake, about 3 miles east of Califon in Hunterdon County, and was detected at 9:07 a.m. Thursday. The federal agency that monitors earthquakes says most people don't even feel tremors below magnitude 2.0.

However, even the weakest aftershocks are detected by dozens of seismic sensors spread across Hunterdon and Somerset counties. Following the major earthquake on April 5, the USGS installed five new seismometers in the area, and in recent weeks, researchers from Rutgers and several other universities have installed about 100 smaller seismic sensors.

Their goal is to determine the source, strength and duration of aftershocks, and to find out exactly where the initial quake occurred underground.

Based on past history and preliminary data emerging from seismometers, researchers are fairly certain that the original 4.8 magnitude quake originated near the Ramapo Fault, which runs diagonally from southeastern New York State through northern New Jersey into eastern Pennsylvania.

However, no one knows for sure whether the quake occurred directly along the main portion of the Ramapo Fault or on one of several fractures associated with the fault, according to USGS and Rutgers researchers.

As of early Thursday afternoon, a total of 134 aftershocks had been detected in the area, ranging in magnitude from 0.2 to 3.7 magnitude. These are the latest aftershocks. (A complete list of all detected aftershocks can be found below.)

Magnitude 1.0: Detected at 9:07 a.m. Thursday, about 3 miles east of Califon. Magnitude 1.6: It was discovered at 1:13 pm Wednesday, about 4 miles east of Califon. Magnitude 0.5: Discovered at 7:46pm Tuesday, about 4 miles west of Gladstone. Magnitude 1.2: Discovered at 3:46 a.m. Tuesday, about 4 miles east-southeast of Califon

“Aftershocks are a series of earthquakes that occur after a larger mainshock occurs on a fault,” the USGS noted. “Aftershocks occur near the fault zone where the main shock rupture occurred and are part of the ‘adjustment process’ after the main slip on the fault.”

Aftershocks usually become less frequent over time, “although they can last for days, weeks, months or even years in the case of a very large mainshock,” the agency says.
