Earthquakes measuring 6.1 and 5.8 strike northeastern Taiwan Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook northeastern Taiwan at 2:21 a.m. on Saturday (April 27) and was followed by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake at 2:49 a.m., according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The authority said the epicenter of the first quake was 23 kilometers north-northeast of Hualien County Hall, at a shallow focal depth of 24.9 kilometers. Taiwan uses an intensity scale from 1 to 7, which measures the degree to which an earthquake is felt at a specific location.

The intensity of the earthquake was recorded as 4 in Hualien County, Yilan County, Nantou County, Taichung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, and New Taipei. A severity level of 3 was recorded in Miaoli County, Hsinchu County, Taipei County, Taitung County, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, and Chiayi County.

Severity level 2 was reported in Keelung, Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Pinggu County. A severity level of 1 was measured in Pingtung District.

The epicenter of the second earthquake was located 29.9 km northeast of Hualien County Hall and at a shallow focal depth of 18.9 km.

A severity level of 4 was recorded in Hualien County, Yilan County, Nantou County, Taichung, and Hsinchu County. A severity level of 3 was recorded in Taoyuan, New Taipei, Miaoli County, Taipei, Hsinchu, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Taitung County, Chiayi County, and Chiayi.

Severity level 2 was reported in Keelung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. A severity level of 1 was measured in Pingtung County and Pinggu County.

No injuries or damage have been reported as a result of either earthquake until the date of publication.

Aftershocks have continued in Hualien since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the area on April 3.
