Hundreds of homes were damaged and eight injured in the West Java – archipelago earthquake

The earthquake that occurred in southern West Java on Saturday evening, and was felt by residents of Jakarta, destroyed hundreds of buildings in many cities and areas in the province, and caused many people to be injured, with no reports of deaths.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), a 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook the area at 11:29 pm on Saturday. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 156 kilometers southwest of Garut in West Java and at a depth of 70 kilometers below sea level.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured 6.1 at a depth of 68.3 kilometers. The earthquake caused a shockwave that affected several cities and districts in West Java, including Banjar Municipality and the regions of Garut, Bandung, Tasikmalaya and Sukabumi.

The earthquake was also felt by residents of Jakarta, Serang, Banten and Yogyakarta, which are located 350 kilometers from the epicenter.

While BMKG did not issue a tsunami warning due to the quake, it did alert people in areas where they felt the shock.

Iman Krisnawan, 47, a resident of the regional capital Bandung, told AFP: “I shouted at my wife and children to ask them to get out of the house.” “Normally, earthquakes last about 5 seconds, but this one lasted between 10 and 15 seconds.”
