BNPB records 267 homes damaged following the M6.2 Garut earthquake

BANDUNG (ANTARAG) – At least 267 houses were reported to have been affected by the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked Garut District, West Java Province on Saturday evening (April 27), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.

“As of 4 a.m. on Monday local time, we recorded 267 damaged homes in total,” BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communications Center head Abdul Mahari noted in a statement received by the agency in Bandung on Monday.

Muhari noted that regional disaster mitigation agencies in the earthquake-affected areas were working to assess the extent of the damage and determine other impacts of the earthquake.

According to Mehari, the National Building Protection Office recorded eight houses with major damage, 56 houses with moderate damage, and 191 houses with minor damage. He also revealed that 12 other homes were damaged, without providing any details about the extent of the damage.

“With regard to homes that have been declared simply affected, the BNPB is still waiting for more detailed information from the BPBDs,” he revealed.

The official also noted that 51 of the 267 damaged houses were identified in Bandung District, 46 homes in Ciamis District, 42 homes in Garut District, 24 homes in Tasikmalaya City, 21 homes in Tasikmalaya District, and 17 homes in Sukabumi District.

After completing the damage assessment, it was stated that the BPBD in West Java and the affected areas and cities will immediately take measures to restore public facilities, clean the environment from debris and repair damaged homes.

He further noted that based on BPBD reports, the earthquake also injured 11 people and damaged several public facilities, such as places of worship, schools, offices and medical facilities.

He concluded by saying: “We have not yet received reports on casualties after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake.”
