Temporary closures are in effect as earthquakes increase beneath Kīlauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii National Park, Hawaii – Kilauea Volcano is not erupting, but a spike in earthquakes has prompted Hawaii National Volcanoes Park to close some areas that could put visitors and staff at risk in the event of an eruption.

Temporary closures include:

• Pothole Chain Road will be closed from the intersection at Crater Rim Drive at 5pm on Monday, April 29.

• Helena Pali Road is closed to everyone. Kolanaukoiki camp is closed.

• Overnight camping has been suspended at all coastal sites, such as Nāpau and Pepeiao Cabin.

• The Kaʻū Desert Trail is closed to the Footprints Gallery.

• Muniki Road is closed.

“Safety is our main focus, and uncertainty about where a volcano could erupt increases the risk,” said Jack Corrao, chief ranger. “Elevated volcanic gases, dangerous lava activity, devastating earthquakes and lava-ignited wildfires are all potential risks associated with an eruption.”

According to the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, it is not currently possible to know whether this increase in activity will lead to an eruption in the near future or if it will simply remain trapped underground. However, the gradual strengthening of seismic swarms suggests that a volcanic eruption in the Kilauea summit area or below the park's upper eastern rift zone is a possible outcome.

About 360 shallow earthquakes have occurred in the past 24 hours between areas south of the Kīlauea caldera to the upper eastern fault zone via the crater chain route near the Puhimau Crater, increasing uncertainty about where the eruption will occur. Their size ranges from M-1 to M-3.

The increased earthquakes did not affect traffic safety or infrastructure projects at the summit.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two of the most active volcanoes in the world, making it stand out among national parks. In 2022, the park closed the summit of Mauna Loa weeks before its historic eruption, which lasted for nearly two weeks. As a result, no evacuations or search and rescue missions were needed.

Many popular areas of the park remain open, including the Kīlauea Visitor Center, which overlooks the length of the Crater Rim Trail, Volcano House, and the Nāhuku lava tube. Park visitors are urged to plan ahead and check the park website for any closure or hazard alerts at www.nps.gov/hawaiivolcanoes.
