The Kīlauea earthquake swarm continues, and closures remain in effect

(BIVN) – Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. The significant increase in seismic activity that began this weekend continued beneath the Upper East Rift Zone and the caldera south of Halema'umau into early Tuesday.

Earthquakes continue beneath the upper East Rift Zone (between Puhimau Crater and Hilina Pali) and beneath the Kīlauea caldera south of Halemaʻumaʻu. The USGS Volcano Alert Level for Kīlauea has been maintained at ADVISORY.

“At this time, it is not possible to say with certainty whether this increase in activity will lead to an eruption in the near future — or will simply remain confined underground,” the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory wrote on Monday. “However, the gradual strengthening of seismic swarms suggests that an eruption in the Kilauea Summit region or below the Upper East Rift Zone, within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is one possible outcome.”

Temporary closures due to activity remain in effect within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which include:

Pothole Chain Road will close from the intersection at Crater Rim Drive at 5pm on Monday, April 29. Helena Bali Road is closed to everyone. Kolanaukoiki camp is closed. Overnight camping has been suspended at all coastal sites, Nāpau and Pepeiao Cabin. The Kaʻū Desert Trail is closed from the Footprints Gallery. The Maunaiki Trail is closed.

The National Park Service said the increased seismic activity did not affect traffic safety or infrastructure projects at the summit.

Scientists say seismic activity in the eastern rift zone is limited to the upper eastern rift zone, with no major earthquakes or deformations occurring beyond the Mauna Ulu zone. Seismic activity in the southwest Kīlauea fault zone remains generally low.
