HVNP closes parts of park as earthquakes increase

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii – Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has temporarily closed several parts of the park as earthquakes increase beneath Kilauea Volcano. It announced late Monday that it would close Chain Road at the intersection with Crater Rim Road starting at 5 p.m.

The closures will ensure the safety of visitors and staff in the event of a Kilauea volcano eruption, according to a park release.

On Saturday, seismic activity increased below the Upper East Rift Zone and the caldera on Kilauea. Since then, the earthquakes have continued and intensified, a US Geological Survey update said.

Between noon Sunday and Monday, seismic readers recorded more than 360 earthquakes. During the previous 24 hours, 250 earthquakes had been recorded, mostly beneath the upper East Rift Zone, with a smaller number in the caldera.

The US Geological Survey stressed that it is impossible to determine whether the increase in activity will lead to an eruption.

However, volcanic eruptions in the Kilauea summit area or below the Upper East Rift Zone are possible outcomes.

Pothole Chain Road from the Crater Rim Drive Hilina Pali intersection is closed to everyone. Kulanaokuaiki Campground is closed, overnight camping is suspended at all coastal sites, the Napau and Pepeiao Cabin Kau Desert Trail from the Footprints Gallery is closed, and the Maunaiki Trail is closed

“Safety is our main focus, and uncertainty about where a volcano could erupt increases the risk,” said Jack Corrao, chief ranger. “Elevated volcanic gases, dangerous lava activity, devastating earthquakes and lava-ignited wildfires are all potential risks associated with an eruption.”

The increasing earthquakes did not affect ongoing infrastructure projects.

The last eruption on Kilauea occurred from September 10 to 16, 2023.
