A 3.4 magnitude earthquake shakes the Oklahoma City metro

While you may think of earthquakes as a western problem for the United States, some of the largest earthquakes in US history have occurred in the east.

EDMOND, Okla. — While many in Oklahoma got a break from severe weather Thursday, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake shook communities in the central part of the state, sending people to social media to find out what was happening.

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Edmond, Oklahoma, and occurred before 6 p.m. local time.

There were no initial reports of vibration-related damage, which is common during low-intensity events.

According to the USGS, earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater usually cause some damage.

The epicenter was very close to where an earthquake struck the state earlier this year.

On January 13, dozens of earthquakes, the largest magnitude 4.4, occurred near Edmond, along Interstate 35, on the north side of the metro.

The USGS has linked many earthquakes across the Southern Plains to human activities such as hydraulic fracturing, the process of injecting water, sand or chemicals into the ground in order to break up bedrock to access oil and gas reserves.

The strongest earthquake in the state's history occurred in 2016 and was linked to the injection of wastewater from oil and gas production.

The 5.8-magnitude quake was centered near the town of Pawnee, more than an hour's drive northeast of the state capital.
