A magnitude 6 earthquake hits Abuyog area in Leyte

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Abuyog in Leyte on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The state seismologist had earlier reported that the quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and was located near Dulag Water.

The earthquake occurred at 6:16 pm, 36 kilometers northeast of Abuyog.

Phivolcs said it was of tectonic origin and its focus was 10 kilometers deep.

Reported severity is felt in the following areas:

5th Density – Abuyog, Borawen, Dulag, La Paz, Macarthur, Mahabalag, Tabuntabon, and Tolosa, Leyte; 4th Intensity – Jagna, Bohol; Balangiga, Borongan City, General MacArthur, Guiborlos, Hernani, Lawan, Llorente, and Quinabondan, Eastern Samar; Barrogo, Baybay City, Calobian, Dagami, Hilongos, Jaro, Javier, Goleta, Kananga, Palo, Pastrana, San Miguel, and Santa Fe, Leyte; Ormoc City; Tacloban City; Basi, Samar; 3rd Intensity – Tagbilaran City, Bohol; Second Intensity – Bogo City, Cebu; Paint, Southern Leyte

Meanwhile, the severity of the machines was recorded in the following areas:
