Small Donegal earthquake confirmed by officials

Officials have confirmed a small earthquake has occurred in County Donegal after a teacher recorded seismic activity on his school equipment.

Brendan O'Donoghue teaches physics at St Columba's College, which is part of the global Seismology in Schools project.

The college in Stranorlar is one of the most successful in the network, having tracked more than 1,000 earthquakes since joining the scheme almost 15 years ago.

County Donegal itself is a hotbed of seismic activity – thanks to its geology – and school equipment often records tremors that people rarely notice.

“My kids came running down the stairs and asked me if I heard snow sliding off the roof,” he said.

“I didn't hear anything, but I checked the seismometers and found a very clear local signal, maybe 10 kilometers from Ballybofey, according to the seismogram.

“It looks very small but some people may report the vibration.”

While such activity is not unusual in County Donegal, more significant earthquakes are rare, but they do occur.

Often, school equipment picks up larger earthquakes, weapons tests, and even sporting events.

INSN said the quake was detected by permanent seismic stations operated by the network and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS).

She added, “The two INSN stations in Donegal, along with stations in Antrim, Louth and Mayo, recorded a 1.1 magnitude earthquake.”

“In addition, this event was also recorded on the Quake Shake seismometer located at St Columba's High School in Strannoller, County Donegal.”
