The 1965 magnitude 6.5 earthquake is a reminder that Seattle is not immune to tremors

SEATTLE — Nearly 60 years ago, on the morning of April 29, 1965, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Puget Sound region.

Three people died from falling debris, and four others died from heart failure caused by the earthquake.

Epicentered in Des Moines, it remains the fourth-strongest earthquake to hit the region since 1850, according to History Link. The last major earthquake occurred in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8.

Seconds before the quake began at 8:29 a.m., people across King County heard loud noises coming from the ground.

The ground then shook for about 45 seconds, toppling poorly built structures and damaging even well-built buildings. The trees and bushes outside swayed, and inside the houses, small clothes crashed to the ground.

In Seattle, where the quake caused the most damage, two 2,000-gallon Rainier Brewing Company tanks fell, spilling beer on the floor.

The landslide in Carkeek Park opened an underground sinkhole that eroded the ground and broke the water source.

Meanwhile, on the top floor of the 38-story Smith Tower, the quake threw a sleeping woman from her bed.

Along Alki Beach, “almost all the smokers were out of order.”

The ground even opened up, spreading sand along a winding 100-foot stretch of the University of Washington's football field.

The earthquake destroyed almost every building, dock and facility on Harbor Island and along the Seattle waterfront.

Even the two-story former Seattle Times building on Fairview Street shook so much that gypsum dust forced teletype printers to stop working.

Elsewhere in King County, Boeing's Renton aircraft plant sustained damage to its floors and ceilings.

In the Pacific Ocean, people felt the quake for more than two minutes, longer than anywhere else in King County.

Most of the liquor bottles in a North Bend liquor store fell and broke, and in Snoqualmie Falls, mail fell from city mailboxes.

The quake was felt in an area of ​​more than 190,000 square miles, including all of Washington, northwestern Oregon, the southwestern corner of Canada, and northern Idaho.
