Two 5.9 earthquakes hit eastern Taiwan in 7 minutes

Taipei, May 6 (CNA) Two 5.9-magnitude earthquakes shook eastern Taiwan seven minutes apart Monday afternoon, and were also felt in Taipei, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

Authority data showed that the first earthquake occurred at 5:45 pm off the coast of Hualien County, eastern Taiwan, and its epicenter was in the sea, 26 kilometers south of Hualien County Hall, and at a depth of 15.6 kilometers.

The earthquake intensity, which measures the actual impact of a seismic event, was highest in Hualien, Taitung and Nantou counties, reaching 4 on Taiwan's 7-level earthquake intensity scale.

The earthquake also reached a magnitude of 3 in Taichung, Tainan, and Chiayi, as well as Yilan, Chiayi, Yunlin, and Changhua counties. It measures 1 in Taipei.

The second earthquake, measuring 5.9, occurred at 5:52 p.m., also off the coast of Hualien County. The epicenter of the earthquake was at sea, 27.8 km south of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 16.1 km.

Its intensity was highest in Hualien and Nantou provinces, where it reached 4 degrees.
