No damage was reported after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Friday, according to the island's meteorological department.

There were no immediate reports on the extent of the damage.

The earthquake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The meteorological department said the quake, which occurred off the coast of Hualien County, was at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Taiwan has been hit by about 1,400 aftershocks since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Hualien last month, killing 17 people.

Taiwan is located near the intersection of tectonic plates, and is prone to earthquakes.

More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake that struck southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
