An Oregon earthquake preparedness exercise will be conducted on the coast on Wednesday

What officials are calling Oregon's largest coastal earthquake preparedness exercise is scheduled to take place in Newport on Wednesday. State legislators, Lincoln County and the Oregon Department of Human Services Office of Resilience and Emergency Management will be on hand to install evacuation collection point equipment at the Newport Municipal Airport.

Evacuation assembly points are short-term locations where people gather in emergency situations, such as the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

These evacuation assembly points provide locations for people to gather for food, water, tents, and medical supplies needed in the aftermath of a natural disaster. The Lincoln County evacuation assembly point at Newport Municipal Airport is the second such site established by the Office of Emergency Management on the Oregon Coast. The first is located at Tillamook Municipal Airport. A third project is scheduled for later this year for Oregon's southern coast.

As part of the preparedness exercise, Oregon emergency personnel will teach community leaders how to prepare evacuation assembly point equipment. The agency made these supplies available to coastal communities like Newport because coastal areas would likely be cut off from emergency responders in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake.
