An earthquake strikes southwestern Ethiopia for the second time in a week

TORONTO – Addis Ababa University's School of Geophysics, Space Sciences and Astronomy announced that an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the South Omo region in southwestern Ethiopia.

BBC Amharic quoted Professor Atalay Ayele, a seismologist, as saying that the earthquake occurred on Sunday at around 12:36 am local time. Bebena Tsemay area “Wyto Dildiye Police Station” is the specific area where the incident occurred.

Aita Ono, district director of Woytu in Bena Tsimi district, confirmed to BBC Amharic that the incident occurred twice. He described the matter as “shocking.”

He added: “Many of us did not believe that we would survive it.”

Four regions and two departments in the city were affected.

This is the second earthquake the region has witnessed in less than a week. The Dowaro region in southwestern Ethiopia was hit by an earthquake last week, BBC Amharic reported on Monday. It was measured at 3 on the Richter scale.
