Seismographs – devices that detect ground movements caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions – are also sensitive to magnetic fluctuations in the atmosphere.

While some scientists are trying to prevent the magnetic impact from entering earthquake data, a team at the University of Alaska Fairbanks found this helpful.

In a new paper, they say that seismometers can detect magnetic signals from the aurora borealis.

The results provide an example of how magnetic oscillation sensitivity in seismometers can be a practical application and show how devices can be paired with other techniques for studying aurora.

The researchers say it is possible to match the lights with seismic signals, allowing experts to monitor and study the phenomenon in new ways.

The seismometers used in the study are part of the USArray Transportable Array, a network of hundreds of temporary seismometers developed across North America – including more than 200 gauges in Alaska, where study data came.

Scientists first discovered the link between northern lights and magnetic disturbances in Sweden in 1741, and a seismograph in Germany revealed a magnetic event generated by the atmosphere during a solar storm in 1994.

But the results show that there are new ways to apply that knowledge.

“People have been making these connections for 250 years,” Tibb said. “This shows that we can still make discoveries, in this case with seismometers, to understand twilight.”
