Slovakia's prime minister has undergone emergency surgery after being shot several times while leaving a government meeting and walking through a crowd in the town of Handlova. Robert Fico is said to have been stabilized for “life-threatening injuries.” As reported, five bullets were fired and hit him in the stomach, arm and leg. The suspect, a 71-year-old man, was arrested at the scene. Slovak media said he worked as a security guard at a shopping mall and the attack may have been politically motivated. Slovakia is increasingly polarized under Robert Fico's government. His populist party started on the left but has increasingly moved to the right. He is anti-EU, anti-aid to Ukraine and anti-LGBTQ rights. His government is seeking to shut down the national public broadcaster, which it accuses of being unbiased and creating political divisions.
