Oregon's largest coastal earthquake drill was conducted at Newport Airport

NEWPORT, OR (KATU) – Do you know what you would do if a Cascadia subduction earthquake struck?

Agencies along the Oregon coast are taking the following steps to protect their citizens from natural disasters.

The Oregon Department of Human Services, state legislators and Lincoln County held an earthquake preparedness drill at Newport Municipal Airport on Wednesday.

“This site will be specifically for moving people out of the area after a large-scale event that requires a higher level of care than we can provide,” says Samantha Buckley, emergency manager. “So, there's dorms for people to stay in and there's a dining tent, a drive tent, some showers.” A medical tent to provide these services to individuals.

In the event of an emergency, the airport will serve as an evacuation assembly point, or EAP.

The site, which takes about four hours to set up, can accommodate about 80 people for up to two weeks, and the plan is to rotate emergency people on and off site.

Along with several groups setting up tents, drones flown by the Scappoose Fire District, helicopters from Life Flight and the U.S. Coast Guard were part of the drills that brought in supplies.

This is not the first emergency drill, but it is the largest for the Oregon coast.

“They've already put one up [EAP] “In Tillamook County, this one in Newport, and the third one is in southern Oregon as well,” Buckley says.

According to Buckley, the airport's location is important because of evacuations and could be used for many people who will be evacuated from the coast during a major disaster.

“We would like to see facilities like this in every community in Oregon when we start to face things whether it's an earthquake or a fire or a big freeze,” says State Representative David Gomberg (D). “This is a bigger plan for the state, but you have to think about your individual planning.” also.

Gomberg believes the Coast is more prepared than most of Oregon, but says, “I don't think we're well prepared. I think we have a lot of work to do.”
