A psychologist warns of an increase in child suicides in earthquake zones in Türkiye

Children in earthquake-hit areas of Turkey are seeing a significant rise in suicide attempts, with some as young as 8 years old, according to Dr. Yeshim Unal Kılıç, who spoke before the Parliamentary Human Rights Subcommittee on Children's Rights and the Stockholm Center for Human Rights. Two major earthquakes struck 11 provinces in southern and southeastern Turkey in February 2023, killing more than 53,000 people, injuring or displacing hundreds of thousands, and causing massive destruction.

Dr Kilic presented a stark report highlighting the alarming increase in suicides and suicide attempts among children. “Our experts are noticing a significant rise in suicide cases, with the age of those who attempt suicide falling significantly,” Dr. Kilic said. “We are talking about children as young as 8 years old trying to commit suicide, especially in rural areas affected by the disaster.”

Dr Kilic, an academic at Haliç University who has been involved in field work with the International Association of Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE) since the earthquakes, stressed the severe psychological effects on children separated from their families. “We are seeing more serious mental health issues in children staying in shelters, those with missing limbs and chronic illnesses, and those without guardians,” she said.

It also highlighted the lack of play areas in container cities and inadequate toilet facilities leading to high rates of bed-wetting among children. Bullying is also rampant, exacerbating the mental health crisis in these areas.

Dr. Kilic noted a rise in drug use among teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 and expressed concern about the number of disabled children in the disaster area.
