An earthquake strikes the city of Goulburn in New South Wales

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Goulburn in New South Wales in the early hours of Thursday morning.

It is believed that residents of the town, which is located halfway between Sydney and Canberra, felt small tremors, just after six in the morning.

On Thursday, seismologist Adam Pascal told Sunrise what local residents would have felt from the quake.

“The closest residents likely heard a loud bang…or a brief shaking,” Pascal said.

Pascal said earthquakes in the region are usually very superficial.

“We got an average location in that area,” he said.

“These earthquakes occur on a very shallow surface, and are usually between 2 and 10 km deep.

“We don't have a good look at it yet.

He added: “We will conduct further analyses. It is certainly strong enough to be felt, but it may not cause any harm in the local area.”

Crockwell resident Linda told 7NEWS about the scary incident.

“This morning I was sitting at the table doing a crossword and having a cup of tea when there was a loud bang,” she said.

“The house was shaking and then there was another loud bang and I thought: What is this?” I thought a truck had passed in front of the house.

“I went out to have a look and there was nothing. It woke up everyone in the house and he was in bed.
